In June 2008 Force 9 energy received approval from the Scottish Government for a 28-turbine wind farm within the Carrick Forest, approximately 2 km north east of Barrhill in South Ayrshire. Mark Hill is located on the shallow south eastern slopes of Garleffin Hill. The site is located approximately 2km north east of Barrhill, in the South Ayrshire Council area.

First Minister, Alex Salmond opened the completed project on 13th June 2011. The wind farm, which is now owned and operated by Scottish Power Renewables, has a capacity of 56 MW. The facility occupies 580 hectares and is equipped with 28 Gamesa G87 wind turbines each of 2 MW capacity. All of the turbines are 110 metres to blade tip and have a rotor diameter of 87 metres. Mark Hill’s construction led to improvements to nearly 20 kilometres of local roads. The nearby Barrhill community benefits from an annual community fund which, in the first 12 months of operation, enabled a new efficient heating system to be installed in the village hall. Local residents from several surrounding villages have also benefited from energy efficient measures installed in their homes.
